MAMSI Announces New Web-Based Automated Eligibility System

Rockville, Md. -Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI), one of the region's largest managed care companies, announced today a new automated eligibility system available to participating physicians, health care practitioners, and facilities. The system, one of the first available in the Mid Atlantic region, allows physicians, health care practitioners and facilities to verify a patient's membership in a MAMSI Health Plan.

"This is good news for our participating physicians, health care practitioners and facilities," said Mark D. Groban, M.D., Chairman of the Board. "With a simple click of the mouse, a physician, health care practitioner, or hospital can verify that the patient is a member of one of our Health Plans and know quickly and easily if the claim should be sent to us for adjudication."

The system will tell a physician, health care practitioner, and facility whether or not the patient is covered under a MAMSI Health Plan policy on the date the query is made. For health maintenance organization members, it will identify the member's Primary Care Physician.

"It is exciting for us to be one of the first managed care companies in the Mid Atlantic region to bring the power of the Internet to our physician partners," remarked Thomas P. Barbera, President and CEO. "We know that interactive web-based services will facilitate business transactions. We are committed to bringing more services on-line."

MAMSI offers other interactive services on its Internet site, www.mamsi.com. These include an on-line directory in which members and interested parties may look up and find participating physicians, health care practitioners or facilities conveniently located near their home or work and a claims status function for participating physicians, practitioners or facilities.

Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc.'s subsidiaries cover about 1.8 million lives in Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Its network includes over 40,000 physicians, specialists and affiliates and 340 hospitals throughout the total service area.
