MAMSI (NYSE: MME) Presents Spirit of Service Award

Frederick, MD - Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI) (NYSE: MME), one of the mid-Atlantic region's largest managed care companies, awarded the second annual Spirit of Service Award, Saturday, June 10th, at its offices in Frederick.

Each year, MAMSI's Spirit of Service Award honors a MAMSI employee who demonstrates outstanding service to the community or a charitable organization through ongoing humanitarian service or a single significant contribution. In appreciation for the employee's community service, the Company donates $1,000 to the organization where the award recipient has volunteered. MAMSI initiated the Spirit of Service Award to recognize the Company and its employees' community commitment.

The 2000 Spirit of Service Award was presented to Fred Smith, honored for his work at the South Baltimore Homeless Shelter for women and children. Mr. Smith, an employee in MAMSI's Clinical Care Coordination Department, has volunteered at the Shelter for over seven years, organizing meal preparation, and clothing and other needs' drives. The shelter provides housing, food, clothing and supportive services to women and children in crisis.

"For the last seven years, Fred Smith has given unselfishly of his time, energy and heart to help the women and children benefited by the South Baltimore Women and Children's Shelter. Fred's efforts exemplify the qualities that MAMSI's Spirit of Service Award seeks to honor," stated Thomas P. Barbera, CEO and President of MAMSI, who presented the award to Mr. Smith during the festivities at the Company's annual picnic. "MAMSI is proud to present a $1,000 donation to the Shelter in Fred Smith's name."

Mr. Smith's name was etched on a granite plaque at the foot of the large American flag that flies outside the main entrance of MAMSI's Frederick facility at 800 Oak Street. Fred Smith and his family live in Damascus, Maryland.
