MAMSI REPORTS EARNINGS FOR
FOURTH QUARTER AND FISCAL YEAR ENDING 1998
Rockville, Md. -- Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI) (NYSE-MME), one of the largest managed care companies in the mid-Atlantic region, announced earnings today for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended December 31, 1998.
Prior to the one-time accruals, diluted earnings for fiscal 1998 were $19,981,000 or $.44 per share on 45,473,995 weighted average shares, compared to earnings of $14,489,000 or $.31 per share on 46,885,666 weighted average shares for the same period in fiscal 1997. After the one-time items, net income for fiscal 1998 was $9,045,000 or $.20 per share.
Diluted earnings per share on net income for the fourth quarter of 1998 was $.13 on 42,628,219 shares outstanding, compared with $.13 per share on 46,995,403 shares outstanding for the same period in 1997.
Revenue for fiscal 1998 was $1.188 billion, compared with $1.112 billion in 1997, an increase of $76 million. Medical and home health patient services expenses in 1998 were $1.016 billion, compared with 1997s $957 million, representing an increase of $59 million. Administrative expenses for 1998 were $134.6 million, compared with $130.0 million in 1997 -- an increase of $4.6 million.
Revenue for the fourth quarter of 1998 was $304.6 million, compared to $276.2 million for the same quarter in 1997, an increase of $28.4 million. Net income for the quarter was $5.5 million or $.13 per share, compared with $6.2 million or $.13 per share for the same period in 1997. Medical and home health patient services expenses for the fourth quarter of 1998 were $261.4 million, compared with $234.8 million for the same quarter in 1997, an increase of $26.6 million. Administrative expenses for the fourth quarter of 1998 were $35.0 million, compared with $32.1 million in 1997.

We have a solid foundation upon which to build no debt, strong cash flow and a healthy balance sheet. We have the largest regional provider network, state-of-the-art backroom support, and no Medicare exposure in 1999. Our new direction is the right direction to continue this earnings momentum."
Total membership in all products was 1,790,000 covered lives as of December 31, 1998 -- up from 1,687,500 as of December 31, 1997.

Membership growth continues. As of January 31, 1999 the total number of covered lives under all managed care plans reached 1,820,900. Of that figure, 745,900 are HMO, indemnity and ASO plan members; and 1,075,000 are PPO members. Product membership breaks down as follows:

The companys provider network numbered 30,600 physicians, specialists and affiliate providers; 2,900 hospitals and outpatient facilities; and 11,400 pharmacies as of December 31, 1998.
