MAMSI RECEIVES HUMAN RELATIONS AWARD

Rockville, Md. -- Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI), one of the largest managed care companies in the mid-Atlantic region, received the Human Relations Award last night from the Frederick County Human Relations Commission. The award, which was accepted by MAMSI's Chairman of the Board, Dr. Mark D. Groban, was presented to MAMSI for its diverse employee hiring programs and the charitable efforts and contributions of its staff to the community.

"I am honored that you recognized the employees and programs of MAMSI with this prestigious award and I accept it proudly on their behalf," Dr. Groban said at the awards banquet last night. "We have a talented and dedicated staff whose diversity reflects that of our community and enables us to offer highly personalized customer service. I am particularly proud of our employees who give so freely of their time for so many worthwhile causes. We accept this award with our commitment to continue our excellent services to the community," he added.

MAMSI, who has offices in Rockville and Frederick, hired over 800 employees from the greater Frederick area since December 1997 when they moved a large part of their operations to Frederick. The company's workforce demographics and hiring programs, which were considered by the Commission when selecting the award recipient, include the following:

• Over 29% of those hired for the Frederick office are persons from minority groups. Twenty-four persons with disabilities are on staff at Frederick. Management of the Frederick facility is composed of over 57% females and over 23% minorities.
• MAMSI recruits employees using the Maryland State Employment Service and received recognition for its successful participation in the Welfare-to-Work Program.
• MAMSI has a representative on the Frederick Workforce Development Board and participates in the JTA/Chamber of Commerce Free Enterprise Education Program, providing speakers for Frederick Community College classes.

Concerning charitable efforts and giving:

• Last October, MAMSI's Frederick employees turned their parking lot into an "Octoberfest" to raise funds for the United Way. Over $60,000 was raised.
• Over the past ten years, MAMSI helped to raise over $1 million for cardiac research and heart disease treatment for the American Heart Association.
• For over four years, MAMSI's Claims Department has conducted a holiday charity event. This year they showered the citizens of College View Retirement Home with holiday gifts and a party for the residents.
• MAMSI sponsored "Checkpoint Three" in the recent WalkAmerica for the March of Dimes. While the numbers aren't in for this year's participation, in 1998, they raised $7,600 for the March of Dimes.
