MAMSI Children’s Foundation, Inc. Formed, Donations Being Accepted

Rockville, MD – Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI), one of the mid-Atlantic region’s largest managed care companies, today announced the formation of MAMSI Children’s Foundation, Inc. (Foundation). The Foundation will enhance the lives of children by giving grants to those who need health care services not fully covered by insurance or other funding.

The Foundation received a $50,000 donation from MAMSI to begin its operations. MAMSI will match the first $2 of each payroll deduction an employee contributes to the Foundation.

Larry Pignone, Executive Director of the Montgomery County United Way, was elected President of the Foundation. Other Foundation board members include Donald Hammett, John Murdock, Esquire, and Creighton Schneck.

"There are few places for families who have gaps in their coverage to turn to for funding medically necessary services for their children," said Larry Pignone, President of the Foundation. "The Foundation fills an important void."

Little public attention is given to children with gaps in their coverage. These are children who are covered by public or private health insurance but need services or items not covered by these policies. Examples of these services and items are experimental services, certain transplants, and co-payments for durable medical equipment.

"As the parent company of several health plans, our employees often hear about insured families that cannot fund medically necessary services for their children and we wanted to make a difference in the lives of these children," Thomas P. Barbera, President and CEO of MAMSI explained. "MAMSI and its employees wish to pool their resources with others in the community to help children who are often forgotten. The Foundation offers a way for us to do this."

Individuals interested in making a contribution to the Foundation may contact Dan Willoth, Executive Director, MAMSI Children’s Foundation, Inc., 4 Taft Ct., Rockville, MD 20850.

MAMSI’s subsidiaries cover over 1.8 million lives in Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. It is one of the mid-Atlantic region’s largest managed care companies. The Company’s web site is www.mamsi.com.
