Everyone needs health insurance, including students. Good health is essential to your academic success, and adequate insurance makes sure you get the care you need to maintain your good health. We strongly encourage all students to have health insurance. For students without adequate coverage, the University of Maryland is pleased to offer student health insurance, developed especially for UMCP students by MAMSI Life and Health Insurance Company (MLH).

*Important!

New Eligibility Requirement 6 Credit Hour Minimum

Coverage is provided after a covered student or dependent satisfies a $300 deductible within the Policy year, with a maximum Plan year deductible of $600 for a family.

The deductible and UHC copayment will not apply when a student is seen at the UHC.

See a detailed summary of what is covered .

You are free to choose any physician or hospital when you need health care services. However, preferred providers have agreed to accept MLH's allowable amount (after appropriate co-insurance and deductible) for covered services as payment in full. Your out-of-pocket costs will be higher if you go to a health care practitioner outside of the network. If a student receives any covered services from a non-preferred provider, with the exception of home medical equipment, MLH will reimburse the member for the services.

It is your responsibility to ensure the physician, hospital, or other health care practitioner you plan to use is a preferred provider with MLH. A list of preferred health care practitioners participating in MLHs PPO Network is available at the UHC, or by calling 1-800-224-8535 or visiting www.mamsiUnitedHealthcare.com.

Members receive prescription drugs for a copayment, plus any applicable ancillary charge1, when using a participating pharmacy (University of Maryland Pharmacy is a participating pharmacy). The copayments are $10 for each generic, $20 for each formulary brand and $35 for each non-formulary brand prescription or refill. The maximum benefit is $1,200 per member per contract year.

You may not be covered under your parents' health insurance program. Many plans stop providing coverage for dependents, usually after the age of 23, even if you are a full-time student. In addition, you may not be covered by your parents' plan if you have declared financial independence. You should check the applicability of your coverage while you are a student at the University of Maryland.

If you are covered by a health maintenance organization (HMO), you should check to see if coverage is available in the College Park, Md. area. It may be to your advantage to add this policy, thus avoiding charges for services your HMO does not cover.

Apply for coverage now.

If you plan to buy the student health insurance policy, please read the following:

  • There are three open enrollment periods:
    • 07/04/05 to 09/30/05 for coverage 08/15/05 to 08/14/06
    • 01/02/06 to 02/28/06 for coverage 01/27/06 to 08/14/06
    • 05/15/06 to 06/15/06 for coverage 06/01/06 to 08/22/06

  • Each time you need care or treatment, you must choose whether to stay "In-Network" or go "Out-of-Network." If you choose an in-network provider, the benefit is 70% of usual, customary and reasonable charges. If you see an out-of-network provider, the benefit is only 60%.

  • Rates for the three enrollment options and other additional information can be found at the University Health Center or click on the Premium Schedule Page.
